Spring semester I took Palliative Care with Dr. P and it was super interesting! I don't think they offer this class anymore unfortunately, but I would definitely recommend it if you are interested in pain management. This semester I am taking Geriatrics with Dr. Estus and I absolutely LOVE it. I have already learned so much about treating older adults and we even got to participate in an inter professional experience with PT, SLP, and audiology students called "Senior Day" where we assessed a real patient and made recommendations. I have heard that the spring geriatrics course is slightly different than the fall course, but either way I recommend this class to anyone whether or not you are interested in geriatrics because older adults make up a large portion of the patients we treat. Reach out to me with any questions!
Last semester I took Leadership with Dr. Orr and Dr. LaPlante and I absolutely LOVED IT. The environment is so laid back. They stress that they don't want this elective to be hard and they want you to grow and another great part are no exams! We do a fun bonding event in the beginning and a rock climbing course at the end. We got to present a poster with our group at Face of Pharmacy which was an awesome experience. The most work we do is little reading homework assignments and we make a presentation based on a legislation from our hometown. All in all, I learned a low, felt I grew as a leader, and had fun. I highly recommend this elective! Hmu if you want to know more!
Spring semester of P2 year I took an elective outside of the College of Pharmacy called Death, Dying and Bereavement (HDF421). You can take up to one elective outside of the COP and I highly recommend this one with Ethan Adler. There were a couple of exams (that are all on Quizlet!) plus a couple of assignments from a book we have to read that are very laid back. I found this class to be a really good break from core and pharmacy and was very useful since conversations about death and dying with patients isn't really integrated into our curriculum. You may tear up from the stories he brings up in his 8 am class so bring tissues :'( Let me know if you have questions about it!
Last semester I took Dr. Feret's hospital elective and it was very informative. He brought in a lot of speakers that specialized in different areas of hospital pharmacy and gave lots of general information about working in hospital pharmacy. The class had an exam which was very easy and some presentations and group work but nothing was a ton of work. We were not allowed to have laptops out but overall I enjoyed the class and felt like it was very helpful.
