Alumni Spotlight: Madeline Shurtleff

Updated: Aug 10, 2022

Meet Madeline, LKS Xi Alumna, who graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy from URI and now works at Aetna. Q&A about pharmacy school, work-life balance, and post-grad advice.

What year did you graduate? 2014

What positions did you hold for LKS while attending school? Alumni Chair (twice), Chapter Treasurer, and Chapter President

Where do you currently work? Tell us a little about your job. I work at Aetna managing pharmacists that do prior authorization reviews for 14 different Medicaid plans.

What advice do you have for younger students? Do not get so focused on one aspect of pharmacy that you miss out on another opportunity

What is one way that LKS has helped you grow and develop?

It has helped me to build a strong group of friends and be able to mentor and provide advice to younger students who want it.

If you had not chosen pharmacy, what would have been your second choice? Law school

What do you do in your free time?

Anything that I can do outside, but especially hiking with my two golden retriever puppies.

Who was your favorite professor? Dr. Orr

What advice would you give to younger students interest in a residency/fellowship/ post-graduate education? Network with sisters who have gone through the process, do your research on the programs, and PREP FOR INTERVIEWS! I cannot stress that second part enough. It is horrible when I interview potential residents who can't even explain why they want to do a residency or have answers to behavioral/situational questions.
